“Your relationship with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have.”  —Robert Holden

What To Do:

Loving yourself is a conscious decision that needs to be made every day. How you begin your day can set the tone for how the rest of your day goes and the power lies in positive thinking. Start your day with morning meditation, whether you sit in a quiet room alone with your thoughts or go for a morning run—there is more than one way to meditate. The goal is simply to release negative energy and fill up with the good.

You can also start your day by wearing something comfortable that makes you feel good. Stop to appreciate the person staring back at you in the mirror. It’s not self-centered or obnoxious; it’s self-love. And when someone pays you a compliment, let it soak in. Say “thank you,” take it in, and keep smiling. If you do not love yourself, no one else can truly make you feel loved.

Why To Do It:

One of the reasons mental health experts talk about loving yourself is because the practice has a direct impact on your relationships. “Loving yourself has to do with the capacity to direct compassion toward yourself, and ultimately toward others,” explains Washington, DC-based psychologist Alicia Clark. “If you love yourself conditionally, you will always be looking for someone to act in ways to win your love, and will likely be often disappointed.”
