Visualization is one of the easiest relaxation strategies to help quell feelings of anxiety and worry. Focusing on a soothing image such as a cloud not only calms an agitated nervous system, but it also creates a new perspective that feels empowering in a difficult moment.
What To Do
Lie on your back with your hands by your sides. Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Imagine you are lying on a white, puffy cloud. Feel yourself sink into the cloud as it lifts you up and up. Your cloud is taking you to your happy place—a favorite beach or hiking trail, or even just your comfortable couch. Relax. Take another deep breath in, and then let it out.
Why To Do It
When relaxation is achieved, it combats tension, stress and anxiety. It can even—according to an article published in the British Medical Journal— be used as a complementary treatment for sleep disorders. According to Richard Wyzanski, a sound therapist who uses instruments as a healing technique, after playing meditation sounds on an ancient aboriginal instrument, he experiences “a feeling almost beyond description — a true earth connection.”
